VEVO Check Australia: How to Check Your Visa Status Online

A VEVO check is a practical way to confirm the current status of your Australian visa, expiry date and conditions before you make decisions about work, study and travel. The DHA also provides a VEVO enquiry service for users who encounter problems, with the Department aiming to respond to eligible enquiries within five working days. In this guide, we will take a look at what VEVO shows, who can use it, what information you need and how to check Australian visa status online.

What Is VEVO Check in Australia?

A VEVO check in Australia is an online service from the DHA that lets visa holders view their current Australian visa details and conditions. A VEVO check can show information such as visa type, expiry date, period of stay, work rights and other applicable conditions.

Who Can Use a VEVO Check to Verify Visa Status?

A VEVO check allows Australian visa holders to view their own current visa details and conditions. Moreover, registered organisations can also verify visa details, provided the visa holder has given the required permission.

  • Visa holders: You can use VEVO to check your current visa details and conditions. Then, send proof to employers, landlords or relevant government authorities.
  • Employers: Employers can check a prospective or current employee’s work rights through VEVO after receiving the visa holder’s permission.
  • Education providers: Authorised education providers can use VEVO status check to learn more about a student’s study entitlements and applicable study conditions.
  • Registered Migration Agents: All registered migration agents with a valid MARN can register for the relevant VEVO access category and check information about a client’s current in-effect visa.
  • Other eligible organisations: Labour suppliers, licensing authorities, financial institutions, real estate agents, telecommunications companies and government agencies can access specific VEVO categories when they have a legitimate business need.

Note: VEVO can’t confirm Australian citizenship – citizens should use their passport or citizenship certificate instead. Organisations also need the appropriate ImmiAccount access to use VEVO.

What Do You Need for a VEVO Check Online?

When it comes to checking visa status, you need an accepted travel document, a reference number and your date of birth. You must also enter the document details correctly, alongside the country of the document where required.

  • Travel document: VEVO accepts a passport, ImmiCard, Convention Travel Document or Titre de Voyage, Document for Travel to Australia (DFTTA), and PLO56 evidence card.
  • Reference number: You can use your Transaction Reference Number (TRN), visa grant number, visa evidence number, or VEVO password if one has been assigned to you.
  • Date of birth: Your date of birth is required when accessing your visa details.
  • Travel document number: Enter the number from your passport, ImmiCard or other accepted travel document.
  • Country of document: Select the relevant country when required. If you use a Titre de Voyage, enter the nationality shown on that document.
  • Current visa reference: Use the reference number that belongs to your current visa. A reference number for a visa that is not currently in effect will not provide access to your visa details.
  • Accurate details: Check every entry carefully. The Department specifically warns against confusing similar characters, such as the letter I with the number 1, or the letter O with the number 0.
  • ImmiCard users: You do not need to select a country when using an ImmiCard.

How to Check Your Visa Status Online Through VEVO

To learn how to get VEVO check, access the official VEVO service and enter your travel document, reference number and personal details. You can then submit the information to view your current visa details and conditions. Here are the exact steps that you need to follow:

  1. Access VEVO: Open the Department of Home Affairs VEVO service online.
  2. Select the check option: Choose Check your own visa details with VEVO.
  3. Select your document: Choose your passport, ImmiCard, Convention Travel Document, DFTTA or PLO56 evidence card.
  4. Enter your reference number: Provide your TRN, visa grant number, visa evidence number or VEVO password, if assigned.
  5. Enter your date of birth: Provide your date of birth exactly as required.
  6. Enter document details: Add your travel document number and country of document where required.
  7. Check your information: Make sure similar characters, such as O and 0 or I and 1, have not been confused.
  8. Submit: Accept the VEVO terms and conditions and then select “Submit” to access your visa information.

If you feel unsure how to interpret the information returned by VEVO, a registered migration agent can explain your visa conditions and what they mean for your circumstances.

Common VEVO Problems and Fixes

  • No record found: This usually happens when a passport number is entered incorrectly, a renewed passport hasn’t been linked to your visa yet, or the visa you’re checking is no longer in effect. Double-check your details, or contact DHA to have your record updated.
  • VEVO and ImmiAccount don’t match: VEVO updates faster than ImmiAccount, so if the two show different information, treat VEVO as the current, accurate source.
  • Bridging visa not showing: If your substantive visa is still active, DHA won’t display the bridging visa alongside it – this is expected behaviour, not an error.
  • Technical errors: If the site won’t load or the check fails to process, try a different browser or device, or check back later in case DHA is undergoing maintenance.

Conclusion

Your visa conditions can change with renewals, travel history or a passport update, so it’s worth running a VEVO check before any major decision – a new job offer, enrolling in a course, or booking international travel. It only takes a couple of minutes, and it saves you from relying on outdated visa grant letters or assuming your conditions haven’t shifted. If your results ever look off or unclear, a registered migration agent can help you make sense of them before you act on incorrect information.
